Grok AI Voice Mode Is Now Live on Apple CarPlay – Ask Questions Hands-Free While Driving

Recently, xAI officially launched the CarPlay voice mode for its Grok chatbot, allowing users to ask questions or give commands to the AI hands-free directly from the vehicle's dashboard. Previously, the Grok iPhone app only showed a placeholder in CarPlay with a "Hands-free support coming soon" message. This feature became possible after Apple opened up CarPlay integration for third-party voice-driven conversation apps in iOS 26.4, though developers must obtain special authorization from Apple and use its voice control templates.

With this move, Grok has become the third major AI voice assistant to land on CarPlay, following ChatGPT (launched in March) and Perplexity (launched in April). iOS 26.4 also introduces an "Ambient Music" widget for CarPlay and automatically enables the above features for users running this version or later. Apple emphasizes that CarPlay has long restricted third-party app types to minimize driver distraction.

With Grok joining the lineup, the competition among AI voice assistants in driving scenarios is heating up. For users, hands-free interaction offers greater convenience, but also tests each provider's ability to deliver accurate speech recognition while adhering to safe driving standards. In-car AI assistants are likely to become a standard feature of smart cockpits in the future.
