The open-source AI agent space has a new leader. As of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, built by Nous Research, has officially surpassed OpenClaw to take the top position on OpenRouter’s global daily active application and agent leaderboard. Public data shows that Hermes Agent processes roughly 224 billion tokens per day, while OpenClaw handles around 186 billion tokens in the same timeframe. OpenClaw’s founder, Peter Steinberger, joined OpenAI in February 2026, and the project has since transitioned to an independent open-source foundation, now sponsored by OpenAI.
Hermes Agent’s rapid rise to the top is attributed to its unique self-improvement loop architecture and a steady stream of version updates. Shortly after OpenClaw released v0.11.0 “Interface” (which rebuilt its React/Ink TUI, added AWS Bedrock support, and introduced five reasoning paths), Hermes Agent pushed out its latest v0.13.0 “Tenacity” on May 7, 2026, further optimizing reasoning efficiency and multi-platform compatibility. Through continuous self-training and feedback mechanisms, Hermes Agent has gained a clear advantage in response quality and token utilization efficiency.
