How to Set Up a Spotify Family Plan: Create, Invite, and Manage Members

Spotify's Family plan not only costs less per person than individual Premium, but also lets up to six household members share Premium perks. However, many users run into confusion when creating and managing family group members. This guide walks you through the whole process—from setting up the family group and inviting members to handling day-to-day management—so your whole household can enjoy the shared experience.

1. How to Create a Spotify Family Group

First, make sure your account is upgraded to a paid Premium individual plan. Open the Spotify app or web player, go to your account settings, and find the "Switch to Premium Family" option under "Subscription." After clicking it, you'll be asked to enter your home address—this step is critical because all members must live at the same address to pass verification.

Fill in your full address (including street, city, and ZIP code), then confirm payment for the Family monthly fee (it's usually a bit more than an individual plan, but split among members it's very affordable). Once the payment goes through, your account automatically becomes the "Family plan manager," and you can start inviting members.

2. Invite Family Members to Join

As the manager, go to the "Premium Family" management panel in your account and click the "Add Member" button. The system will generate a unique invite link that you can share via text or email with your family. Note: each member needs their own Spotify account (a free account works) and must be at least 13 years old.

After clicking the link, the invitee must accept the family group agreement and agree to share address information. Spotify may randomly ask some members to verify their address—most commonly by sending a postcard with a confirmation code to the address you provided. Make sure the address is real and valid, or the verification may be rejected.

3. Daily Management & Common Issues

The manager can view the member list anytime under "Family Group Settings" and remove members who no longer live at the same address (for example, after moving or voluntarily leaving). Removed members are automatically downgraded to the free version, but they keep their playlists and saved content. Each family group can only change managers once every 12 months, so choose the right person from the start.

Common issues include address verification failure (double-check your ZIP code or resubmit), a member unable to use Premium after joining (restart the app or log out and back in), and expired invite links (generate a new one from the management panel). For tricky problems, contact Spotify support directly—they usually respond within 24 hours.
