Spotify Error Codes: The Complete Troubleshooting Guide

If you use Spotify, you’ve probably faced a song that won’t play, a login that keeps failing, or a random error code — especially after switching devices or networks. This article breaks down the most frequent Spotify error situations and provides step-by-step troubleshooting that actually works.

Why You See “Can’t Play This Song”

When you tap a track and get a “Can’t play this song” message, it’s usually one of three things: an unstable internet connection, a temporary Spotify server glitch, or regional copyright restrictions blocking the song. First, try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If that doesn’t help, restart the app or clear the cache (go to Settings → Storage → Clear cache). If the album art shows up gray, the track isn’t available in your region — switch to another song or use a version stored in your local files.

Login Failure & “Request Error” Fixes

You enter your correct credentials but the login fails over and over? That usually points to an expired third‑party login token or a proxy/VPN interference. Start by checking that your phone or computer’s date and time are set to automatic, then turn off any VPN or accelerator. If you’re logging in with Facebook or Google, try switching to email/password login instead. If you see a “Request error (-1)”, uninstall and reinstall the app, and make sure your operating system is up to date.

Stuttering & Buffering Problems

Music keeps buffering even though your internet speed is fine. The culprit is often too many offline songs downloaded in the background, eating up your storage. Go to Settings → Audio Quality and lower the streaming bitrate to “Normal” (96 kbps). Meanwhile, head to Storage and delete any unused offline tracks. If you’re on a Family plan, ensure the primary account’s region matches your current IP address — otherwise Spotify will cut playback due to regional restrictions.

Unlocking a Locked Account

Entering the wrong password too many times or suspicious login activity can temporarily lock your account. You’ll see a “Your account has been temporarily locked” message. The fix is simple: visit Spotify’s Account Recovery page, submit the email linked to your account, and you’ll receive a reset link within 24 hours. Don’t keep retrying — doing so will extend the lockout period. If a family member in your Family plan gets locked, the primary account can remove them under “Manage members” and then send a new invitation.
