New to Spotify and not sure how to sign up? Switched devices and can’t figure out how to log in? This step-by-step guide walks you through creating a Spotify account, linking your email, setting a password, and quickly switching accounts across different devices—so you can start streaming music hassle-free. Whether you’re on your phone, computer, or tablet, the steps are simple and intuitive.
Two Main Ways to Sign Up for a Spotify Account
Open the Spotify website or app, then click the “Sign Up” button. You can register using an email address, or log in instantly with Google or Apple ID. Email registration is recommended: enter your email, create a password (at least 8 characters with letters and numbers), fill in your display name and date of birth, then check the box to agree to the terms of service. After submitting, you’ll receive a verification email—click the link to activate your account and start using it.
If you prefer not to link an email, you can authorize quickly with your Google or Apple account, skipping the form. Note: The free account doesn’t require payment but includes ads and limits on skipping tracks. To enjoy an ad-free experience, you can upgrade to Premium later.
Logging In and Initial Setup: Link a Phone Number or Third-Party Account
After successful registration, enter your email and password on the login screen to access your homepage. It’s recommended to link a phone number under Settings > Account, which makes it easier to recover your password or receive security alerts. Spotify also supports linking third-party accounts like Facebook, Google, and Apple—once linked, you can log in with one tap and never worry about forgetting your password.
On first use, you’ll be prompted to select your favorite music genres—pop, rock, classical, etc. This helps shape your “Discover Weekly” and daily recommendation playlists. You can skip this step and adjust your preferences later under Settings.
