New to Spotify and not sure how to sign up? Switched devices and can’t figure out how to log in? This step-by-step guide walks you through creating a Spotify account, linking your email, setting a password, and quickly switching accounts across different devices—so you can start streaming music hassle-free. Whether you’re on your phone, computer, or tablet, the steps are simple and intuitive.

Two Main Ways to Sign Up for a Spotify Account

Open the Spotify website or app, then click the “Sign Up” button. You can register using an email address, or log in instantly with Google or Apple ID. Email registration is recommended: enter your email, create a password (at least 8 characters with letters and numbers), fill in your display name and date of birth, then check the box to agree to the terms of service. After submitting, you’ll receive a verification email—click the link to activate your account and start using it.

If you prefer not to link an email, you can authorize quickly with your Google or Apple account, skipping the form. Note: The free account doesn’t require payment but includes ads and limits on skipping tracks. To enjoy an ad-free experience, you can upgrade to Premium later.

Logging In and Initial Setup: Link a Phone Number or Third-Party Account

After successful registration, enter your email and password on the login screen to access your homepage. It’s recommended to link a phone number under Settings > Account, which makes it easier to recover your password or receive security alerts. Spotify also supports linking third-party accounts like Facebook, Google, and Apple—once linked, you can log in with one tap and never worry about forgetting your password.

On first use, you’ll be prompted to select your favorite music genres—pop, rock, classical, etc. This helps shape your “Discover Weekly” and daily recommendation playlists. You can skip this step and adjust your preferences later under Settings.

Switching Accounts Across Devices: Phone, Computer, and Tablet Seamlessly

Spotify allows you to use the same account on different devices, but only one device can play at a time (unless you subscribe to Premium Family). Switching accounts is easy: tap the gear icon in the top-right corner of the app to open Settings, scroll to the bottom, and select “Log Out.” Then enter the credentials for the other account.

If you often switch between your phone and computer, enable the “Play on Other Devices” feature on your phone (Settings > Connect to a Device). This lets you control playback on your phone from your computer, or vice versa. Note: When you switch accounts, any downloaded offline music will be cleared and will need to be re-downloaded.

Common Registration & Login Troubleshooting

Seeing “Email already registered” during sign-up? Click “Forgot Password” on the login page to reset it, or try logging in with that email using a linked third-party account. Didn’t receive the verification email? Check your spam folder, or try a different network (disable VPN) and resend. Getting a “Network Error” on login? Make sure your Wi‑Fi or mobile data is working, and try again later. If the issue persists after multiple attempts, submit a support ticket through Spotify’s official Help Center—they usually reply within 24 hours.

Pro tip: Using Gmail or Outlook increases the success rate; avoid some smaller email providers (e.g., QQ mail is sometimes blocked). For account security, enable two-factor authentication under Settings > Security and Login. You’ll need to link a phone number first to activate it.
