On May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, an open-source AI agent developed by Nous Research, officially overtook OpenClaw to claim the top spot on OpenRouter's global daily application and agent leaderboard. This shift marks a significant change in the open-source AI agent landscape. According to public data, Hermes Agent processes an average of 224 billion tokens per day, while OpenClaw handled 186 billion tokens over the same period—a clear gap.
Hermes Agent's core competitive advantage lies in its self-improvement loop mechanism, which allows it to continuously optimize performance through ongoing learning and feedback. The agent also maintains an extremely high iteration speed, with recent updates covering reasoning path expansion and platform integration. In contrast, OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI in February 2026, and the project itself has been transferred to an independent open-source foundation sponsored by OpenAI. OpenClaw recently released v0.11.0 "Interface" and v0.13.0 "Tenacity," adding features such as a React/Ink TUI rewrite, native AWS Bedrock support, and GPT-5.5 integration, but its overall development pace has slowed.
