Grok, the AI assistant developed by xAI, has officially launched its hands-free voice interaction mode for Apple CarPlay users. Drivers can now ask questions or give commands directly through the car dashboard, enabling full voice control. Previously, Grok only showed a placeholder app on iPhone CarPlay with a note that "hands-free support is coming soon." This update marks the transition from beta testing to a fully released feature.
The rollout is made possible by new permissions introduced in iOS 26.4. For the first time, Apple allows third-party voice-driven conversational apps to integrate with CarPlay. However, developers must apply separately for special authorization from Apple and strictly follow the company’s voice control templates. The iOS 26.4 update, released last month, also added an "Ambient Music" widget for CarPlay, further enhancing the in-car experience. As long as the connected iPhone runs iOS 26.4 or later, CarPlay will automatically support Grok’s new voice mode.
