Hermes Agent Surpasses OpenClaw to Claim the Top Spot on OpenRouter's Global Ranking

The open-source AI agent space is witnessing a new leader. According to the latest data, as of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, built by Nous Research, has surpassed OpenClaw to claim the top position on OpenRouter's global daily apps and agents leaderboard. OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI in February 2026, and the project has since been transferred to an independent open-source foundation, with sponsorship support from OpenAI.

Despite the ranking shift, OpenClaw continues to evolve rapidly. Its v0.11.0 release introduced a full React/Ink rewrite of the terminal user interface, native AWS Bedrock support, and five inference pathways including NVIDIA NIM and Vercel ai-gateway, along with GPT-5.5 access via Codex OAuth. The latest v0.13.0 version was released on May 7, 2026, with a total of 1,556 commits and 761 merged PRs. On the platform support front, OpenClaw now covers 17 platforms, including QQBot.

This ranking rivalry highlights the rapid evolution of open-source AI agent technology. Hermes Agent has gained community traction thanks to its self-improvement mechanism, while OpenClaw remains competitive through high-frequency updates and ecosystem expansion. Moving forward, healthy competition between the two projects will continue to push autonomous AI agents toward greater practicality and accessibility — something developers should keep a close eye on.
