OpenAI Launches Codex Chrome Extension for In-Browser Coding

OpenAI today officially released the Codex for Chrome extension, allowing the Codex AI coding tool to run directly inside the Chrome browser. The extension is available on both Mac and PC. Codex can test web applications via the browser, pull context across multiple tabs, and invoke Web DevTools—all without taking over control of the user's browser. This marks an important expansion of Codex from a desktop application to the browser.

OpenAI noted that since launching the "computer use" feature in the desktop version of Codex, they observed that most common workflows happen inside the browser. The new Chrome extension is designed to let Codex handle browser-based tasks that plugins or APIs can't cover, faster and more conveniently. This move is part of OpenAI's effort to make Codex better serve daily productivity while preserving its professional value for developers.

In addition, OpenAI also introduced a new ChatGPT subscription tier at $100 per month, tailored for heavier Codex usage. This plan offers stronger computing resources and longer conversation context to meet the high-intensity needs of professional developers and enterprise users. Starting today, users can download the extension from the Chrome Web Store and choose a subscription plan that fits.

This extension is expected to significantly lower the barrier to using Codex, especially for web developers who frequently debug, test, and prototype in the browser, giving them a smoother AI-assisted experience. In the future, the browser could become the main battlefield for AI coding tools.
