Grok, the AI model from xAI, has now begun deep involvement in the development of Tesla’s autonomous driving technology. The update was first reported on Sunday by the well-known Tesla observer account Whole Mars Catalog, marking a shift in Grok’s role from an in-car voice assistant to a core component of the autonomous driving system. Previously, Grok mainly handled smart voice interactions inside Tesla vehicles. This upgrade in technical integration has drawn widespread industry attention to the growing collaboration between xAI and Tesla.
Currently, Grok operates in a dual mode inside Tesla vehicles. On one hand, it serves as a more natural conversational AI assistant that can replace the existing command system. On the other hand, the "Hey Grok" hands-free activation feature and a dedicated autonomous driving app, introduced in a spring 2026 update, have now officially connected Grok to the driving control chain. It’s important to note that these new capabilities are currently limited to Tesla models equipped with AI4 hardware, as well as newer Model 3 and Model Y batches. Real-world test videos from Reddit and Facebook users show that Grok can now understand continuous commands such as "engage Autopilot," "increase speed," and "navigate home," enabling true hands-on-wheel operation.
