According to Business Insider, the role offers an annual salary range of $295,000 to $445,000, and the job description explicitly requires "strong technical execution capabilities to support readiness work for recursive self-improvement." This indicates that OpenAI is proactively building safety defenses for a new generation of AI systems capable of autonomously training and optimizing themselves.

Recursive self-improvement refers to an AI system’s ability to research and iteratively upgrade its own algorithms, leading to exponential capability growth. OpenAI has already listed "building AI tools that can study their own improvements" as one of its core goals.
