According to an exclusive report by Axios, OpenAI has officially launched the Rosalind Biodefense Program, designed to leverage artificial intelligence to improve biodefense and pandemic preparedness. The program will grant "trusted developers" access to the GPT-Rosalind model, a specialized AI model built for life science research, enabling them to build practical biodefense tools. OpenAI has pledged to sponsor access to these tools and provide startup support covering epidemiological modeling, early detection, screening, prevention, non-pharmaceutical interventions, and other public health efforts.
OpenAI stated that its supported institutions cover the full lifecycle of biological threats, ranging from prevention and early detection to social resilience building and medical countermeasure development. The company has briefed the White House and multiple federal agencies on the program's implementation plan and is further engaging with federal agencies focused on public health. At the same time, OpenAI is gradually expanding access to the GPT-Rosalind model, allowing specific U.S. government agencies and allied partners to use it in support of public health and biodefense missions.
