Spotify Common Error Codes Troubleshooting Guide: Resolve Playback & Subscription Issues

When using Spotify, playback interruptions, subscription failures, or login issues are common headaches. This article compiles the most frequent Spotify error codes and troubleshooting methods to help you quickly restore your music experience. Whether you're a free user or a paid subscriber, these solutions will come in handy.

Error Code 1: Spotify Playback Interruption or Buffering Failure

Frequent buffering or a "Unable to play this track" prompt while playing songs is usually related to network connection or cache conflicts. Start by checking network stability: switch to 4G/5G or restart your router. If the issue persists, clear the Spotify app cache by going to Settings > Storage > Clear Cache (Android) or uninstall and reinstall the app (iOS).

Another common cause is forced logout due to account login from another device. Go to Settings and check "Connected Devices," remove unfamiliar devices, then log in again. If you see "Error Code: 4," it means a network timeout — simply disconnect your VPN or proxy and retry.

Error Code 2: Spotify Subscription Payment Failure

When subscribing to Spotify Premium and encountering "Payment Declined" or error code "Auth Error," it's usually due to incorrect bank card details or an expired credit card. Double-check your billing address and CVV code, and try a different payment method like PayPal or a gift card. If using an international credit card, ensure overseas payments are enabled.

Some users in certain regions may see a "Region Mismatch" error, which occurs when your account region doesn't match the country of your payment method. To fix this, update your profile region in account settings, or initiate a new subscription via the Spotify website and select a country that matches your payment card.

Error Code 3: Spotify Login Failure or Account Locked

If you see "Incorrect username or password" but you're sure the details are correct, your account may be compromised or flagged by the security system. Immediately reset your password via the "Forgot Password" option and enable two-factor authentication for extra security. For users in Hong Kong or Taiwan, note that Spotify may not be fully supported in certain areas — try using the international version of the client.

Error code "503" usually indicates server overload — wait a few minutes and retry. If you see "Your account is temporarily blocked," visit the official Spotify support page to submit a manual appeal; it's typically resolved within 24 hours.

Error Code 4: Spotify Local Files Not Syncing

When you add local songs to a Spotify playlist on your computer but can't see them on your phone, first check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the local file format is MP3 or M4A (supported by Spotify). If the files show as "unavailable," try moving them to the "My Music" folder on your computer and re-enabling the "Local Files" feature in settings.

Another possibility is that importing too many songs at once causes the index to break. We recommend syncing no more than 200 songs at a time, and pulling down to refresh your playlist on the mobile app. If it still fails, log out of your account and log back in — the files should appear normally.

Error Code 5: Spotify Family/Student Plan Verification Failure

When subscribing to a Family plan and receiving a "Verification address mismatch" error, ensure all members use exactly the same home address (including capitalization and spaces). For GPS-based Family plans, all members must be on the same Wi-Fi network during initial activation. Student plan verification failures often occur because the educational email isn't recognized — submit your student ID via the SheerID manual review channel instead.

Also, avoid submitting verification requests too frequently in a short period, or the system may temporarily lock you. If you encounter "Error 17," it means the family group is full — remove an existing member before adding a new one.
