New to Spotify and wondering how to register an account or switch between devices without missing a beat? This guide walks you through sign-up, account linking, and switching so you can enjoy music anytime, anywhere.

How to Create a Spotify Account: Email vs. Phone Number

Open the Spotify website or app and click "Sign Up." You can register using your email—just enter a valid email address and set a password, then verify via the confirmation email. Alternatively, use your phone number to receive an SMS verification code. Note that some countries require the +86 prefix. We recommend using a primary email to avoid password recovery issues later.

Choose the free plan during registration—you can upgrade to Premium later. Once signed in, Spotify’s recommendation algorithm will gradually tailor playlists based on your listening habits.

Account Linking: Connect Third-Party Logins & Payment Methods

Go to Settings and find "Account Linking." You can connect Google, Facebook, or Apple ID. Once linked, you can log in directly with those accounts next time, saving you from typing passwords repeatedly. If you plan to upgrade to Premium, you’ll need to add a credit card or PayPal. For users in China, we recommend a card that supports foreign currency payments.

Linking your phone number is also essential: go to "Security & Privacy" and add a backup number. This helps with password recovery or security notifications. Avoid unlinking it casually, as it may affect family plan sharing features.

Switching Accounts: Multi-Account Management Tips

Spotify allows you to log in to multiple accounts on one device, but only one can play at a time. Tap the gear icon in the app’s top-right corner, select "Switch Account," then log out of the current account and sign in to another. If you share a family plan, strongly encourage each member to use their own account to prevent playlist confusion.

On desktop, switching is even simpler: click your profile picture, select "Log Out," then enter the new account details. Note that frequent switching may trigger temporary restrictions—limit it to no more than 3 times per day. If you use the web version, your browser’s saved passwords can speed up the process.

Multi-Device Sync: Seamless Playback Across Phone, Computer & Speakers

When you log in to the same account, playback progress syncs automatically. For example, if you pause a podcast on your phone, you can resume it on your computer by opening Spotify. Make sure all devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that "Cross-Device Playback" is enabled. For smart speakers, connect via Spotify Connect first.

If sync fails, try updating the app to the latest version, or log out and log back in. Sync works between iOS and Android too, though occasional playlist order glitches may occur. We recommend manually backing up your playlists to your library from time to time.
