Complete Guide to Uploading and Analyzing Files in Claude: PDF, Word, Excel & More

Claude

Claude allows users to upload common document formats like PDF, Word, and Excel, then intelligently analyze, summarize, and answer questions based on the file content. Mastering this feature can significantly improve document processing and information retrieval efficiency. This guide walks you through the file upload steps, analysis techniques, and key considerations.

How to Upload Files to Claude

In the chat interface, click the paperclip or plus icon on the left side of the input box to select a file from your local device. Claude currently supports PDF, TXT, CSV, PPTX, and DOCX formats, with a single file size limit of 50MB. After uploading, the system automatically parses the text content and displays the file name and processing status in the conversation.

If your file contains many images or scanned pages, ensure the text is selectable—otherwise Claude cannot read the content. For encrypted or password-protected documents, remove the restrictions before uploading.

Core Tips for File Analysis

Once a file is uploaded, you can ask natural language questions to get targeted responses. For example, "Summarize the key data from this quarterly report" or "Extract all customer contact information from the table." Claude will locate the relevant sections in the file and cite the original text for easy cross-checking.

For segmented analysis, specify page numbers or chapters: "Only look at the conclusion on page 3." For long documents, start by asking Claude to generate a table-of-contents overview, then drill down into specific details. Free-tier users are limited to one file per conversation, while Pro users can upload multiple files simultaneously for comparison.

Multi-File Analysis and Comparison

Pro users can upload multiple files in the same conversation—for example, two versions of a contract or financial reports from different years. Enter "Compare the differences in the terms between these two files," and Claude will list additions, deletions, and changes item by item. Note that the free version only supports single-file operations; upgrading is required for multi-file functionality.

Before uploading, rename your files to help Claude distinguish them easily. After uploading, you can also ask Claude to generate a one-sentence summary for each file to quickly grasp their key points. Multi-file analysis is especially useful for contract reviews, copy editing, and similar tasks.

Common Questions and Important Notes

Image formats such as JPG and PNG are not currently supported for direct text recognition—they can only be sent as attachments. You will need to use an OCR tool to convert them into readable text before uploading. If your file contains non-standard encoding or special characters, some characters may be lost during parsing. The analysis results are for reference only; always manually verify critical data.

Additionally, Claude does not save uploaded files. Files are automatically deleted after each conversation ends. For long-term storage, make sure to back them up yourself. If an upload fails, check your network status, file format, and file size. You can also try compressing the file before re-uploading.
