Spotify offers two service models: Free and Premium. However, many users aren't clear on the exact differences. This article compares key aspects like ads, audio quality, offline downloads, and playback control to help you decide whether upgrading to the paid plan is worth it.
Ad Experience & Playback Limits
Free-tier users hear scheduled audio ads every few songs, with no option to skip them. Additionally, the Free mode only allows shuffled playback of playlists or albums—you cannot pick a specific song on demand. Premium removes all ads entirely and supports on-demand playback, letting you select and play any song instantly without interruptions.
Audio Quality & Offline Features
In terms of audio quality, the Free tier maxes out at 160 kbps AAC, while Premium delivers up to 320 kbps AAC. Premium also supports lossless audio (available with an additional subscription to the HiFi plan). Offline downloads are a Premium-exclusive feature—you can save songs, albums, or podcasts to your device and listen without an internet connection. Free users can only stream online.
