Spotify Error Codes Solved: Complete Guide to Fixing Playback, Login & Subscription Issues

Getting an error while listening to Spotify, a subscription failure, or a locked account? Don't panic—this article breaks down common error codes and how to fix them. Whether it's playback interruptions, payment hiccups, or login issues, follow these troubleshooting steps to get back on track quickly.

1. Network & Playback Issues

If you see "Unable to connect to server" or "Playback failed," first check your Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Switch networks and restart the app—this usually resolves temporary communication glitches. If the problem persists, try disabling your VPN or proxy. Spotify has strict proxy detection in some regions and may block playback outright.

Another frequent error is "Error code: auth:2." When this appears, log out and log back in, or clear the app cache (both iOS and Android have this option in settings). If it keeps happening, your device's time may be out of sync—manually calibrate the date and time and try again.

2. Login & Account Lock Issues

Getting "Incorrect username or password" at login? First, make sure Caps Lock is off, then use the "Forgot password" feature to reset. If you receive an email saying your account is locked, it's usually due to a login from an unfamiliar location or too many password attempts triggering security protections. Go to the official account page, submit an unlock request, and verify your email or phone number to regain access.

If you're using third-party login (e.g., Facebook or Apple ID) and the redirect fails, switch to email and password login instead—some third-party authorizations have been unstable recently. Enabling two-factor authentication with your phone number or email can also reduce accidental lockouts.

3. Subscription Payment Failures

When subscribing to Spotify Premium and getting "Payment method declined," first check your bank balance or credit card limit. Many users in China encounter cross-border payment blocks from their banks. Call your bank to enable overseas online payments, or switch to a PayPal-linked account. For Family or Duo plans, if the primary payer changes their card, all members are paused—you'll need to reconfirm the address information.

Another common issue is "Subscription error code: premium_2." This usually happens when your current IP location doesn't match the registered region—for example, signing up in the Argentina region but paying from a China IP will trigger the error. In this case, make sure your proxy is stable and matches the account region, or migrate to a more compatible region.

4. Clear Cache & Reinstall

If none of the above work, try a thorough cache clear: Windows users delete all files under %appdata%\Spotify, Mac users clear everything in ~/Library/Application Support/Spotify. Then uninstall the app, restart your device, and reinstall. Be sure not to check "Keep offline music"—otherwise, old data may continue causing issues.

On mobile, go to Settings > App Management, find Spotify, and select "Clear storage" instead of just clearing the cache. This resets all local configurations, but your account data remains in the cloud—you'll need to re-download playlists after logging in. If the problem persists, try logging in on a different device to determine whether the issue is with your account or the device itself.
