Spotify Family Plan: How to Create and Manage Your Group Subscription

The Spotify Family Plan lets up to 6 people share a Premium subscription at a lower cost than individual plans. This tutorial covers the complete process—from setting up your family group to managing members and troubleshooting common setup problems.

How to Create a Family Plan Subscription

First, make sure your Spotify account is on the Premium Individual plan and that your account region supports Family plans. Open the Spotify app or web player, go to Account > Subscriptions, select the Premium Family plan, and confirm payment. After payment, the system generates an invitation link that must be used at the same home address.

Note: All family members must live at the same address. Spotify periodically verifies address information. Once the group is created, the group manager can set a "family address," and every member must accept that address to join.

How to Invite Members Correctly

On the family group management page (available on both desktop and mobile), click the Invite Members button. The system will generate a unique link or send an SMS invitation. We recommend using the link to avoid delays caused by email issues. Each member clicks the link, logs into their own Spotify account, confirms the invitation, and agrees to the family address.

If a member sees an "address not in the same area" error, check whether their account region matches the manager’s. If not, have the member change their region in Settings (using a VPN to switch to the manager’s country), then accept the invitation. Wait 30 minutes after changing the region before retrying.

Member Management and Common Adjustments

The manager can view the member list on the family group page at any time, and can remove or replace members. After removal, that member reverts to a free individual plan and cannot rejoin the same family group for 30 days. Note: The group manager can only be changed once per month, and the manager cannot simply leave—they must first transfer the management role to another member.

If a member encounters a "locked and cannot join" error, it usually means that account has switched family groups too often recently. Contact Spotify Support to explain the situation, or wait 30 days before trying again. Family members keep their own playlists and recommendation algorithms separate—no interference between users.

Tips to Avoid Triggering Address Verification

Spotify may randomly ask the manager to verify the family address, typically via GPS location or by uploading proof of address (e.g., a utility bill). To lower the risk, avoid frequently changing your network IP after creating the family group, and have all members use the same WiFi router if possible. If you receive a verification notice, use Google Maps to set your location to the manager’s registered address—this usually passes the check.

If address verification fails, the family group is forcibly disbanded, and all members are switched to the free individual plan. At that point, you can create a new family group, but you will need to use a different address or contact support to appeal.
