The Trump administration has recently intervened in an environmental lawsuit against artificial intelligence company xAI, arguing that the Grok system—which provides critical support to the military—should not be disrupted by air pollution regulations. According to tech publication Ars Technica, the U.S. Department of Justice stated in court documents that restricting operations at xAI's Mississippi data center would threaten national security, as the facility supports the military's "War Department" in combat operations, including assisting precision strikes against Iranian targets during "Operation Epic Fury."
The lawsuit, filed in April by the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), alleges that xAI and its subsidiary MZX Tech operated 27 gas turbines without permits in South Haven, Mississippi, violating the Clean Air Act. Lawyers from the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), representing the NAACP, noted that the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality had previously determined the turbines did not require permits. However, the government argues that "xAI should be allowed to break the law simply because the Trump administration says so."
