OpenClaw Tutorial: Getting Started, Cross-Device Sync, and Account Management Guide

OpenClaw

OpenClaw is a practical tool, but many beginners get stuck on registration, device binding, and switching between multiple devices. This step-by-step tutorial will walk you through the entire process—from creating an account to syncing data between your phone and computer—so you can save time and avoid trial and error.

Two Ways to Register Your OpenClaw Account

Open the OpenClaw app and tap the "Register" button to enter the new user page. You can register directly with your email: enter a valid email address, set a password of at least 8 characters, and the system will send you a verification email. Click the link to activate your account. Alternatively, you can use Google or Apple ID to log in with one click, skipping the form-filling step. Note: Some domestic email providers may not receive the verification email. We recommend using Outlook or Gmail. If you don't see the email after a while, check your spam folder. Once registered, the free version is ready to use, but it comes with limited features.

Binding Devices and Sync Settings

Binding devices is the key to sharing data across different terminals with OpenClaw. On your logged-in computer, go to "Account Settings" and find the "Bind Device" option. A 6-digit temporary code will appear. On your phone, open the same OpenClaw account, go to the "Sync" page, and enter this code. The two devices are now linked. After binding, all your saved bookmarks, reading progress, and settings will sync automatically—no manual transfers needed. If you have multiple devices, like an iPad or a backup phone, just repeat the process. You can bind up to 5 devices. If you get an error during binding, first check that your network is stable, then make sure both devices are running the latest version of OpenClaw.

How to Switch Accounts and Log Out Properly

Many users need to switch OpenClaw accounts frequently to try different plans or share accounts. It's straightforward: tap the profile icon in the top-left corner of the app's home screen, go to "Account Management," and select "Log Out." This clears the current session and returns you to the login screen. Then enter another account's email and password to switch. However, note that after switching, local data on the device won't be deleted automatically, but synced data will be overwritten by the new account. If your account contains important data, we recommend manually backing it up first. Also, after switching, the paid benefits of the previous account will be immediately revoked. Don't switch in the middle of using a service, or it may be interrupted. For shared account users, it's best to agree on usage time slots to avoid frequent switching that might trigger security warnings.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting Tips

Beginners often run into binding failures or sync freezes. Binding failures are usually caused by an expired temporary code—the code is only valid for 90 seconds, so you'll need to regenerate it if it times out. If errors persist, try restarting the app or clearing the cache. Sync freezes are often due to network firewalls blocking OpenClaw's data channel. You can temporarily disable your VPN or switch to your phone's mobile hotspot and try again. Account lockouts usually happen when you enter the wrong password too many times in a short period. Just wait 15 minutes for it to unlock automatically—no need to keep retrying. If you see a "Request Error," check the OpenClaw official status page to see if the server is under maintenance, so you don't waste time troubleshooting unnecessarily.
