In its high-stakes evolution of balancing rapid expansion with stable operations, OpenAI is accelerating its commercialization efforts. The company has launched an AI-powered self-service performance ad platform for small and medium businesses and officially added ChatGPT Ads to its ad inventory. This move is seen as a critical step in OpenAI’s pursuit of sustainable revenue, enabling SMBs to leverage its conversational AI ecosystem for precision marketing directly.
To broaden its reach, OpenAI has begun expanding its ad infrastructure into international markets. After launching in France, the company recently rolled out a self-service “Ads Manager” in the UK, allowing local SMBs to create and manage ad campaigns independently. Internally, OpenAI has also restructured: instead of handling e-commerce tasks like payments, cancellations, refunds, and travel bookings directly, it now redirects ChatGPT users to merchants’ own apps to complete purchases. This marks a shift away from being a transaction intermediary, focusing instead on efficient ad-driven traffic and brand connections.
