New to Spotify? Account linking, device switching, and family group settings can be confusing. But with a few core steps, you can freely switch between accounts and share Premium with your family. Here’s a simple breakdown of registration, account linking, and family plan management.

Registration & Basic Account Linking

Open the Spotify website or app, select “Sign Up,” and create an account using your Gmail, Apple ID, or phone number. It’s recommended to link your Gmail for faster login when switching accounts later. After registration, go to “Settings,” find “Account,” then “Link Social Accounts,” and connect your Spotify account to your phone or tablet. This way, when you switch devices, just tap “Log in with [your account]” to automatically sync your playlists and preferences without re-entering your password.

Quick Multi-Account Switching

Many users have multiple Spotify accounts—for example, a free version for background music and a Family plan for high-quality audio. On mobile, tap “Settings,” scroll to the bottom, and select “Add Account” to log in with a second account. A switch icon will appear next to your profile picture at the top, letting you toggle between accounts instantly. On desktop, go to “Settings,” then “Account,” and click “Switch Account.” Note that free accounts only support one device at a time, so pause playback on the other device before switching to avoid logout conflicts.

Creating a Family Plan & Managing Members

The Family plan offers the best value, allowing up to 5 family members. The admin must subscribe to Spotify Premium Family, then go to “Account” and select “Manage Members” to send invitation links. Each member must enter the same home address as the admin, and Spotify may randomly verify it. If the address doesn’t match when checked, the account will be downgraded. It’s recommended that the admin use a real, actual home address for all invitations—avoid virtual addresses. Once members accept, each keeps their own playlists and recommendations, but they can enjoy the shared “Family Mix” playlist—perfect for listening together as a family.

Troubleshooting: Account Locked & Switch Failures

The most common issue is seeing “Account Locked” when entering a password—usually caused by multiple failed login attempts or a security flag due to access from a different location. To fix it, check your registered email for a confirmation link to reset your password, or contact Spotify Support to unlock the account. If switching accounts gets stuck on a loading screen, clear the app cache first: go to “Settings” > “Storage” and tap “Clear Cache,” then try switching again. If that doesn’t work, uninstall and reinstall the app—it should resolve the issue.
