This compilation covers the most common pitfalls when using Claude day to day: replies suddenly becoming shorter, files “not readable,” and conversations getting stuck or disappearing. Each issue includes an actionable troubleshooting sequence to help you avoid trial and error. When you encounter similar situations, following the steps usually lets you pinpoint the cause.
Truncated replies: not “getting dumber”—usually a context or output limit
Claude stops halfway through an answer and the ending looks cut off; common causes are hitting the output-length cap, an overly long conversation context, or a temporary page glitch. You can first ask Claude to “continue from the previous paragraph—outline first, then expand,” which usually fills in the missing content. If it still keeps getting cut off repeatedly, it’s recommended to start a new chat, condense the key background into bullet points, and paste them in—Claude will be more stable.
When writing long pieces, don’t ask for “the full article in one go.” A more reliable approach is to have Claude provide the structure first (table of contents/key points), then generate section by section, and label the end of each section with “to be continued/completed,” which also makes proofreading easier.
File parsing failed: check format and size first, then handle scans and encrypted documents
If Claude says it can’t parse an uploaded file, first check which formats and size limits the upload window supports; common PDFs, TXT, CSV, and images are usually fine, but follow what the page indicates. If it’s a scanned PDF (images only, no text), a blurry photo, or an overly dense table, Claude may not be able to extract usable content. In that case, convert it to copyable text first, or screenshot the key pages and upload them in segments to save effort.
Another frequent cause is encryption/permission restrictions (e.g., password-protected PDFs, enterprise permission documents). Claude often can’t read these. Export an unencrypted copy, or just copy the passages you need analyzed into the chat and have Claude process them in chunks.
