In Midjourney, when you want to “tweak it but not start over,” the most commonly used options are Remix mode and the Vary feature set. Both let you keep iterating based on an existing result, but they differ greatly in the scope of changes, where you access them, and the scenarios they’re best for. Understanding this can save you a lot of rework.
Remix Mode: Lets you change the prompt while continuing generation
The core value of Remix mode is: when you click V1–V4 or create variations, you can conveniently edit the prompt so the new image follows the “new description.” In Midjourney on Discord, Remix is typically enabled via “/settings”; once enabled, clicking a variation button will pop up an editable prompt. It’s more like “iteration with a steering wheel,” suitable for dialing things in from style, camera, and materials all the way to the final result.
Vary (Subtle/Strong): Make small or big changes on the same image
Vary usually appears after you Upscale; Midjourney will then give you two options: Vary Subtle and Vary Strong. Subtle tends to preserve the composition and subject while fine-tuning details, textures, expressions, and small accessories; Strong makes more noticeable changes—possibly even rearranging the pose and background elements. Its advantage is that it’s quick to use: you don’t need to fully figure out a complete new prompt first to give the image a “push.”
