ChatGPT FAQ: File Upload Failures, Image Recognition, and Conversation Sync Issues

ChatGPT

When using ChatGPT to organize materials or extract information from images, the most common stumbling blocks aren’t “not knowing how to use it,” but upload failures, not being able to find the image entry point, and unsynced chat history. Below, these common ChatGPT issues are broken down by scenario; following the checks usually restores things to normal quickly.

File upload failure: You selected a file but nothing happens or it keeps spinning

If ChatGPT runs into an upload failure, first switch to a different network and try again—especially corporate intranets, campus networks, or Wi‑Fi with security auditing, which can easily block upload channels. Then check browser extensions: ad blockers, script managers, and privacy/anti-tracking plugins may affect ChatGPT’s upload component.

If it still doesn’t work, try an incognito window or switch browsers to test (comparing on the same device is the fastest). Also pay attention to the file itself: overly long names, special characters, or very large files are more likely to fail. Renaming the file and compressing it before uploading to ChatGPT is usually more reliable.

Can’t find the image recognition entry point: Unable to send images or image recognition doesn’t work

If you can’t send images in ChatGPT, first confirm you’re in an available chat interface: sometimes the page doesn’t fully load and buttons “disappear”; refresh and re-enter the same conversation. On mobile, also check album/photo permissions—if not authorized, ChatGPT may be unable to select images or the upload may stop immediately.

If the image was sent but ChatGPT doesn’t respond based on “seeing” the image, a common reason is that the image itself isn’t clear (too dark, too blurry, or a screenshot compressed). Crop and enlarge the key area, reduce the number of images in a collage, and then ask ChatGPT to handle it in the order of “first describe what’s in the image, then answer the question”—the success rate is higher.

Messages won’t send: The send button is clickable but the content doesn’t appear in the conversation

If ChatGPT shows no response when sending, it’s usually due to a temporary unstable connection or an abnormal browser cache state. Copy the text in the input box first, refresh the page, then paste and send to avoid losing what you wrote.

Also, if the input is too long, you paste a large amount of text at once, or it contains complex tables, it may trigger a submission failure. Split the content into two or three parts and clearly tell ChatGPT “receive first and don’t answer; summarize after I finish sending,” which usually works more smoothly.

Conversation not syncing: You have history on your phone but can’t see it on the desktop

If ChatGPT conversations aren’t syncing, first confirm you didn’t log into the wrong account: different login methods under the same email (email login vs. third-party login) may correspond to different accounts. The most direct way to verify is to open the “Account/Settings” page on both devices and compare whether the displayed account information matches.

If the account is the same but it still doesn’t sync, log out and log back in, and disable any privacy mode that isolates cookies. In some cases, the browser blocks site storage, causing ChatGPT’s conversation list to load incompletely; allowing site cookies generally restores it.

Account restricted: Prompted about unusual activity or extra verification required

When ChatGPT flags unusual activity, don’t refresh repeatedly or attempt to log in multiple times in a row, as this can make risk controls more sensitive. Prioritize two things: stabilize your network environment (use a consistent, commonly used network when possible) and change your password and clear any suspicious device login records.

If you truly need to switch frequently across multiple devices, try to keep the combination of “regular device + regular network” to reduce cross-location logins in a short period. This makes ChatGPT’s security policy more likely to recognize you as normal usage.
