Many people using voice mode for the first time run into issues like “tapping does nothing,” “can’t hear,” “can’t speak,” or “recognition goes haywire.” Below, organized by the most common scenarios, we clearly explain where to find the settings, how to check permissions, and the troubleshooting order—so you can usually pinpoint the cause and restore normal use within a few minutes.
Voice mode won’t open: first check whether the entry point and permissions are being blocked
If the voice button is gray or it exits immediately when tapped, first check whether microphone permission has been granted to the browser or app. On iPhone, confirm it’s allowed under “Settings - Privacy & Security - Microphone”; on Android, confirm it’s allowed under “App permissions.” On a computer, use the small lock icon in the browser address bar to set Microphone to “Allow.”
Next, confirm you haven’t enabled a system-level “microphone mute/privacy mode.” Some laptops have a physical mute key or an Fn-key shortcut toggle. After adjusting permissions, fully quit ChatGPT and reopen it, then enter voice mode and test once more.
Can’t hear anything: output devices and Bluetooth are the most common culprits
If you can speak in voice mode but can’t hear anything, the audio output has usually been routed to another device—such as Bluetooth earbuds, a monitor speaker, or a virtual sound card from conferencing software. First disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth, or in system sound settings change the “default output” back to your current headphones/speakers.
When using a browser, also check whether the tab is muted, and whether the browser’s volume has been turned down to 0 in the system volume mixer. After ruling out device issues, play any reply in voice mode again to confirm it’s back to normal.
