Artificial intelligence company Anthropic recently notified its Claude Code subscribers that starting at 12:00 PM Pacific Time on April 4, users will no longer be able to use their subscription credits to call third-party tools like OpenClaw. Instead, they must pay additional fees for using these tools through a separate, subscription-independent "pay-as-you-go" option. This change signifies a significant cost increase for developers using the Claude coding assistant integrated with external tools.

Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code at Anthropic, explained on social platform X that the company's original subscription model was not designed for these third-party tool usage patterns. He stated this adjustment is intended to "consciously manage growth to sustainably serve customers in the long term." The timing of this policy shift is notable, coinciding with the announcement by Peter Steinberger, creator of the third-party tool OpenClaw, that he is joining Anthropic's competitor OpenAI, and that the OpenClaw project will continue to operate as open-source with OpenAI's support.
