Anthropic Updates Claude Code Pricing: Subscribers Now Face Extra Fees for OpenClaw Integration

AI company Anthropic has notified Claude Code subscribers of a significant pricing change. Effective April 4 at noon Pacific Time, subscribers will no longer be able to use their Claude subscription credits to access the coding assistant service through third-party tool integrations such as OpenClaw. Moving forward, such usage will require additional billing via a pay-per-use option separate from the subscription, meaning costs for affected users are set to increase.

Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code at Anthropic, explained the decision on social platform X. He stated that the company’s original subscription model was not designed for these third-party tool usage patterns, and this adjustment aims to "intentionally manage growth to serve customers sustainably in the long term." This change follows shortly after Peter Steinberger, founder of the OpenClaw project, announced joining OpenAI, a competitor of Anthropic. Reports indicate that OpenClaw will continue to operate as an open-source project with support from OpenAI.

This pricing strategy update underscores the challenges AI assistant providers face in balancing user needs, third-party ecosystems, and business sustainability. It not only directly impacts costs for developers relying on such integration tools but may also prompt the market to reassess pricing models for AI services combined with external tools. In the long term, as the AI agents ecosystem evolves, the fee boundaries between core services and value-added features are likely to become more distinct.
