X Cracks Down on Clickbait: New Policy Reduces Payments for Low-Quality Content

Recently, Elon Musk's social platform X announced that it will reduce payments to users who publish clickbait and recycled news content. Platform product lead Nikita Bier posted on social media that this move aims to warn account holders against "flooding the timeline" with low-quality content, optimizing user experience and enhancing the content ecosystem's quality. Since Musk's acquisition, X has continually adjusted its creator revenue-sharing program, with this change directly targeting behaviors that gain traffic through simple aggregation or sensationalism.

Bier detailed that all "aggregators"—users who quickly repackage and repost news from other accounts—have seen reduced payouts in the revenue-sharing program. Additionally, permanent payment deductions will apply to those who abuse the "BREAKING" tag on every post. X is also testing new tools to identify content's original authors and allocate a portion of revenue to them, encouraging original content production. This policy aligns with the platform's prior measure of banning revenue for users posting unmarked AI-generated war videos, underscoring its strict stance on content moderation.

This adjustment by X reflects a broader trend in social media of using economic incentives to manage low-quality content. Amid widespread misinformation and clickbait, rewarding originality and curbing speculative behaviors may become crucial for platform competitiveness. This not only fosters a healthier content ecosystem but could also prompt other social networks to follow similar strategies.
