The open-source AI agent space has a new leader. As of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, developed by Nous Research, has surpassed OpenClaw to take the top spot in OpenRouter's global daily app and agent rankings. This shift marks a key turning point for self-driving AI agent technology: Hermes Agent overtook OpenClaw in both performance and user adoption thanks to its self-improvement capabilities, while OpenClaw moved under an independent open-source foundation sponsored by OpenAI after founder Peter Steinberger joined the company in February 2026.
OpenClaw hasn't slowed its iteration pace. Its v0.11.0 "Interface" release includes a complete React/Ink TUI rewrite, native AWS Bedrock support, and five new reasoning paths (including NVIDIA NIM and Vercel ai-gateway). It also added GPT-5.5 access via Codex OAuth and the 17th platform, QQBot. This version totals 1,556 commits and 761 merged PRs. The latest version, v0.13.0 "Tenacity", was released on May 7, 2026, continuing to strengthen its technical foundation.
