How to Create and Manage a Spotify Family Group: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Spotify Premium Family lets up to 6 family members enjoy Premium benefits at a lower price, but many users get confused when creating and managing members. This guide explains how to create a family group, invite members, handle address verification, and more, so you can start sharing music with your family smoothly.

1. Prerequisites for Creating a Family Group

You need to subscribe to the Spotify Premium Family plan first. Before subscribing, make sure your account is a personal account and not already part of another family group. The family group can only be managed by the primary account (the creator), who must provide an accurate home address because Spotify uses address verification to confirm members live in the same household.

In addition, each family member needs their own Spotify account (either Free or Premium; they will automatically get Premium access after joining). The primary account can create the family group from any device, but it's recommended to use a computer or mobile browser rather than the app's smaller interface.

2. Steps to Invite Members

Log into your Spotify account on the web, go to the "Subscription" or "Premium Family" management section, and click "Invite Members." The system will generate a unique link. You can send the link to your family members via email, text, or social media. When each member clicks the link, they need to log into their own Spotify account and agree to join.

Important: Members must confirm the same home address as the primary account when joining. Spotify may occasionally ask the primary account to resubmit address proof (e.g., a utility bill). If the address doesn't match, members could be removed. It's a good idea to standardize the household address format beforehand to avoid errors caused by spaces or abbreviations.

3. Managing Family Group Members and Canceling

The primary account can view all member statuses in the "Family Members" list. To remove someone, click the "Remove" button next to that member. After removal, that member's account reverts to Free, and they will need to resubscribe to use Premium.

If the primary account no longer wants to continue the plan, remove all members first, then cancel the subscription. Note: Once the family group is canceled, all members lose Premium access immediately, but their saved playlists and libraries are not affected. Also, you can only transfer the primary account (the group creator) once per year, so proceed carefully.

4. Common Issues and Tips

Address verification failure is the most frequent problem with family groups. Solution: Check that all members have entered the exact same home address as the primary account (including street, postal code, and city). If it still fails, try clearing your browser cache or switching to a different network before resubmitting.

Additionally, family group members are not allowed to use VPNs or proxies, as the system may flag different geographic locations. If you need to share with family members overseas, consider individual Premium plans or shared accounts. Spotify occasionally checks members' IP addresses; if long-term discrepancies are found, the entire family group may be suspended.
