According to a report from Bloomberg, OpenAI is preparing to take legal action against Apple over a 2024 agreement that integrated ChatGPT into Siri. The deal, part of iOS 18, was intended to deeply embed ChatGPT into the Siri assistant. However, OpenAI believes Apple has not upheld its obligations under the agreement, and its legal team is currently working with an external law firm to "explore a range of options that may be formally executed in the near future." Sources familiar with the matter say one possible outcome is that OpenAI will first send Apple a breach-of-contract notice, rather than immediately filing a lawsuit.
An OpenAI executive, speaking anonymously to Bloomberg, said the company "has done everything it could at the product level," while Apple has not delivered on its promises. Notably, Apple's decision to bring other AI models to the iPhone is not a direct trigger for this move, as the original collaboration was never exclusive. The timing is especially sensitive as Apple is expected to showcase its integration with Google Gemini at WWDC 2026 to upgrade Siri, putting additional pressure on OpenAI.
