During the recent bilateral meeting in Beijing, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged views on agricultural trade and other topics. The White House stated via social media that the two leaders stressed the importance of making progress in preventing fentanyl precursors from entering the US, and called on China to increase its purchases of American farm products. Scott Metzger, an Ohio farmer and president of the American Soybean Association, said the association appreciates the ongoing dialogue between the two countries and looks forward to seeing more soybean purchases in the current marketing year, along with continued progress in fulfilling future procurement commitments.

In its summary of the talks, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the two countries' economic and trade teams had reached broadly balanced and positive outcomes the day before, calling this good news for both nations and the world. However, agricultural trade relations still face headwinds. Faith Paranum, market intelligence economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation, wrote in an analysis that although China and the US remain major trading partners, the bilateral trade relationship has narrowed significantly in 2025 due to trade tensions disrupting two-way flows. President Trump also stated on social media that the meeting with President Xi "went well."

Commentary: The meeting signaled that both sides are seeking common ground in the agricultural sector, but structural differences remain. Whether China and the US can achieve substantive breakthroughs on specific procurement commitments and trade balance moving forward will continue to be a key focus for the market.
