The open-source AI agent space has a new leader. According to the latest data from OpenRouter’s global daily app and agent rankings, as of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, built by Nous Research, has officially surpassed OpenClaw to claim the top spot. OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI in February of the same year, while the OpenClaw project has been transferred to an independent open-source foundation, with OpenAI serving as a sponsor. This shift signals that a self-evolving competitor is rapidly capturing developer mindshare as the top project enters a new phase.

The core innovation of Hermes Agent lies in its built-in "closed learning loop": it not only executes tasks but also learns from each run, autonomously builds new skills, and continuously improves its performance over time—all without human intervention. In contrast, OpenClaw tends to treat agents as "orchestrators" that call pre-built skills to complete workflows. According to public benchmark data, Hermes Agent can save approximately 36% on token consumption when handling the same workload, with lower memory usage, simpler setup, and native support for lightweight deployment methods like terminal and Telegram. This makes it highly attractive to individual developers and budget-constrained teams.

The two frameworks differ significantly in their use cases: OpenClaw’s strength lies in its vast skill ecosystem and extensive messaging app integrations (WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, iMessage, etc.), along with native multi-agent orchestration, making it ideal for automating complex business workflows. Hermes Agent, on the other hand, excels as a long-running "AI teammate", offering continuous optimization through its self-improvement mechanism in single-agent scenarios. For users already running OpenClaw, Hermes provides a dedicated migration tool for a seamless switch. Going forward, the complementarity or convergence of these two architectures may push open-source agent frameworks toward smarter, more maintainable solutions.
