According to foreign media reports, OpenAI is preparing to take legal action against Apple over the stalled integration of ChatGPT into Siri, a partnership that was part of the iOS 18 release. The two companies signed an agreement in 2024 to embed ChatGPT into Apple's voice assistant, but OpenAI believes Apple has failed to meet its contractual obligations. Per Bloomberg, OpenAI’s legal team has retained an outside law firm and is “investigating a series of options that could be formally executed in the near term,” including sending Apple a “notice of alleged breach,” though a full lawsuit may not be filed immediately.

An anonymous OpenAI executive told Bloomberg that the company “has fulfilled all its product-level responsibilities,” while Apple has not delivered on its promises. The executive stressed that OpenAI’s legal move is not a reaction to Apple opening the iPhone to other AI models, as the initial partnership was never exclusive. The report also noted that Apple is expected to announce a partnership with Google Gemini at the upcoming WWDC 2026 to further enhance Siri’s capabilities, which may have intensified OpenAI’s discontent.

Analysis & Outlook: Should OpenAI proceed with litigation, the case would likely focus on specific contract performance details—particularly whether Apple breached terms related to technical integration, promotional support, or user data sharing. Given Apple’s active pursuit of multiple AI partners, OpenAI’s actions may be an attempt to pressure Apple into securing a more favorable integration position. However, legal proceedings are time-consuming and outcomes uncertain; the two sides are more likely to reach a settlement through pre-trial negotiations.
