On May 12, 2026, Toronto time, global content and technology company Thomson Reuters announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic, integrating Claude directly into its legal AI system CoCounsel Legal through a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration. This integration allows lawyers to call upon the authoritative legal content and fiduciary-grade workflows underpinning CoCounsel Legal directly within Claude's workflow, enabling a smooth transition from exploration to execution without sacrificing professional standards.
As a core upgrade of this collaboration, the next-generation CoCounsel Legal will be rebuilt on Anthropic's Claude Agent SDK, creating an intelligent system capable of autonomously planning tasks, selecting tools, retrieving authoritative content, and adjusting in real time during work. The system can access over 1.9 billion documents from Westlaw and Practical Law, along with 1.4 billion KeyCite validity signals, supported by content from more than 2,600 legal experts. "We are building CoCounsel Legal into the core fiduciary-grade system for legal work, connecting the tools lawyers use daily and meeting the standards their work demands," said David Wong, Chief Product Officer at Thomson Reuters. Currently, Thomson Reuters' AI technology serves over 1 million professionals across 107 countries.
