OpenAI is reportedly gearing up for legal action against Apple after the much-anticipated ChatGPT integration with Siri—announced in 2024—has failed to move forward as planned. The partnership was set to be a flagship feature of iOS 18, with Apple aiming to embed ChatGPT deeply into Siri to supercharge its virtual assistant. But progress has been frustratingly slow, and OpenAI has made its displeasure clear.
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI’s legal team is working with an outside law firm to explore “a range of options that could be formally executed in the short term.” One possible move is sending Apple a notice of breach of contract, rather than jumping straight to a lawsuit. A senior OpenAI executive, speaking anonymously, said the company “has fulfilled all its obligations on the product side,” while Apple has not held up its end of the deal. Notably, the executive stressed that Apple opening up iPhone interfaces to other AI models is not the trigger for this legal push, as the original agreement was never exclusive.
