The open-source AI agent space has a new leader. According to the latest data from OpenRouter’s global daily active application and agent ranking, as of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, developed by Nous Research, has surpassed OpenClaw to take the top position. This change signals a significant shift in the competitive dynamics of the open-source AI agent community — OpenClaw, which had long held the lead, is now undergoing critical team and governance restructuring.
OpenClaw’s founder, Peter Steinberger, joined OpenAI in February 2026. Following that, OpenClaw transitioned to operate under an independent open-source foundation, with OpenAI joining as a sponsor. Despite this, OpenClaw has not slowed its technical development: its v0.11.0 “Interface” release introduced a full React/Ink TUI rewrite, native AWS Bedrock support, five new inference paths including NVIDIA NIM and Vercel ai-gateway, GPT-5.5 access via Codex OAuth, and even added a 17th platform, QQBot. The project has accumulated 1,556 commits and merged 761 PRs. The latest version, v0.13.0 “Tenacity”, was released on May 7, but user activity has still been overtaken by Hermes Agent.
