The open-source AI agent space has a new champion. As of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent, built by Nous Research, has officially overtaken OpenClaw to take the top position on the OpenRouter Global Daily Apps & Agents Leaderboard. This shift marks a pivotal change in the competitive landscape since February 2026, when OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI and the project transitioned into an independent open-source foundation sponsored by OpenAI.

Despite the ranking change, OpenClaw has not slowed its technical evolution. Version v0.11.0 "Interface" introduced a full React/Ink TUI rewrite, native support for AWS Bedrock, added five new inference pathways including NVIDIA NIM and Vercel ai-gateway, integrated GPT-5.5 via Codex OAuth, and added a 17th platform — QQBot. The update totaled 1,556 commits and 761 merged PRs. The latest v0.13.0 "Tenacity" was released on May 7, 2026, further strengthening its toolchain and stability.

Hermes Agent's rise to the top underscores Nous Research's strength in the self-improving agent approach. By continuously optimizing itself and efficiently scheduling inference, Hermes Agent has taken the lead in OpenRouter's daily active inference metrics. This leadership change reflects a broader shift in the open-source AI agent ecosystem — from a single-dominant project to a multi-player competitive field where technical direction, community governance, and commercial backing jointly determine sustained competitiveness.

Looking ahead, OpenClaw continues to iterate rapidly under foundation support, while Hermes Agent aims to solidify its position through self-improvement capabilities. Their ongoing competition in inference efficiency, platform compatibility, and tool integration will push the entire open-source AI agent community to higher standards.
