OPenClaw Tutorial: How to Register, Bind API Keys, and Switch Accounts

OPenClaw, an efficient open-source AI agent tool, is gaining traction among developers and everyday users. However, many newcomers struggle with registration, third-party account binding, or switching between accounts. This guide walks you through each basic step so you can start using OPenClaw smoothly and avoid common pitfalls.

Two Ways to Register an OPenClaw Account

OPenClaw currently supports email registration and direct login via a GitHub account. For email registration, click "Sign Up" on the official website, enter your username, email, and password, then check your inbox for the verification email to activate your account. GitHub login is more straightforward: just click "Continue with GitHub" and authorize the connection — ideal if you already have a GitHub account.

Note that your password must include uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers, and be at least 8 characters long. If you don't receive the verification email, first check your spam folder, or try a different email provider (for example, Outlook tends to be more reliable than QQ Mail). Once registered, the system will guide you to the dashboard homepage, where all subsequent operations take place.

Binding API Keys and Third-Party Services

To unlock OPenClaw's full capabilities, you'll usually need to bind API keys from large language model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Go to the left sidebar of the dashboard, navigate to "Settings" → "API Keys", click "Add Key", paste your key, and give it a name. It's recommended to create separate keys for different purposes (e.g., development, testing) for easier management.

If you plan to use OPenClaw with other services (such as Slack, Discord, or a custom Webhook), you can configure them on the "Integrations" page. Before binding, make sure the key has the proper permissions: for example, OpenAI keys need to be linked to a paid account rather than free trial credits, otherwise you'll get a 401 error when making calls. After binding, you can send a test message in "Test Connection" to confirm connectivity.

Account Switching and Multi-Device Sync

Many users switch OPenClaw accounts between their work and personal computers. Does the official client support multiple accounts on the same device? Currently, both the OPenClaw desktop client and web version allow only one active session at a time. However, you can achieve temporary switching by using the browser's incognito mode or setting up two different Chrome profiles with separate configurations.

For a permanent switch, the simplest method is to click your avatar in the top-right corner of the current device → "Log Out", then log in with another account. All configurations (including API keys and channel settings) are stored in the cloud and will sync automatically after switching. If you encounter a "device limit exceeded" prompt because you forgot to log out on another device, go to the "Sessions" section in settings and manually remove the unused device.

Common Registration and Binding Issues

If you see "Email already exists" during registration, that email has been used before — simply use "Forgot Password" to reset your password. If your bound API key keeps failing to connect, first check whether the key has expired (OpenAI keys are typically valid for 3 months), then generate a new one from the official website. Another common pitfall: OPenClaw's free tier imposes rate limits on API calls. If you hit the limit right after binding, wait about 15 minutes and try again, or upgrade to a paid plan.

If you're using the self-hosted version, also make sure that the server port (default 8080) isn't blocked by your firewall and that your DNS resolution is working correctly. For any errors, first check the "Logs" panel in the dashboard — most error codes point to a clear cause, such as "401 Unauthorized" indicating an invalid key.
