ChatGPT Common Error Troubleshooting: Fix Login Failures & Request Timeouts

Errors like sudden crashes, unresponsive pages, or repeated login failures are common among ChatGPT users. This article covers the causes of several high-frequency error codes and manual repair methods to help you resume your conversations quickly.

Login Authentication Failed: Check Network & Cache

If you see "Unable to log in" or the CAPTCHA keeps spinning during login, the issue is often network-related. First, try switching network nodes—especially if you're using a proxy. Choose a low-latency, stable outbound line.

Clearing browser cache and cookies also often works. Go to browser settings, clear data from the past 24 hours, then reopen the ChatGPT page and try logging in again. If it still fails, try incognito mode or a different browser.

Request Timeout or Rate Limit: Control Request Frequency

Seeing "Request timed out" or "429 Too Many Requests" indicates you sent too many requests in a short period. ChatGPT imposes rate limits on both the API and web interface; sending messages rapidly can trigger the protection mechanism.

The simplest fix is to stop all activity for 1–2 minutes without refreshing the page. If you have multiple tabs open, keep just one. For API users, check your code for missing delay (sleep) settings—recommend at least 1 second between requests.

Account Temporarily Locked: Appeal or Wait

If you see "Account locked" or "Your account has been disabled" after logging in, you may have triggered a security rule. Common causes include logging in from an unusual location, frequently switching IPs, or abnormal payment via WeChat/Alipay.

Don’t panic—this is usually a temporary lock. Submit a ticket through the official appeal channel, explain that you are using the account normally, and it’s typically unlocked within 24 hours. Avoid repeated login attempts during this period, as that can extend the lock.

Invalid API Key: Check Permissions & Quota

Developers using the ChatGPT API may encounter "401 Invalid API key" or "403 Permission denied." First, verify whether the key has expired or been manually revoked. Log in to the OpenAI platform, check the API keys list, and if the status shows "Revoked," create a new key.

Additionally, after the free trial quota runs out, API calls will return errors directly. Go to the Billing page to check remaining credits. If it’s 0, you need to bind a payment method and add funds. Note: free credits do not auto-renew; you must upgrade to a paid plan to continue usage.

Page Display Anomalies: Refresh & Reinstall

Occasionally, the ChatGPT page shows a blank screen or a loading spinner that never stops. First, force a refresh (Ctrl+F5). If the issue persists, check if your browser has ad-blocking extensions installed—some rules may incorrectly block ChatGPT’s scripts. Temporarily disable the extension, or add chat.openai.com to the whitelist.

Finally, if none of the above works, try logging out, clearing data, and reinstalling the ChatGPT PWA app (if you use it). Mobile users should update to the latest app version, as older versions often trigger compatibility errors.
