ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI's premium membership, gives you priority access to GPT-4, faster response times, and plugin support. Many users in China encounter payment and account hurdles during sign-up. This step-by-step tutorial will guide you through the entire process and help you avoid common pitfalls.
Preparation: Register & Log In to Your OpenAI Account
First, make sure you have an OpenAI account. Go to chat.openai.com and sign up using your email, Google, or Microsoft account. If you already have a free account, simply log in. Note that due to network restrictions in China, you'll need a stable VPN, and it's best to use an IP address outside mainland China—otherwise, the upgrade option may be hidden.
Once registered, open the ChatGPT homepage and check the bottom-left corner for the "Upgrade to Plus" button. If it's not there, your current region or network may not support it. Try switching your VPN node to the United States or Europe.
Upgrade to Plus: Choose a Plan & Enter Payment Info
Click "Upgrade to Plus," and you'll see two options: Individual ($20/month) or Team ($25/month per user, includes team management features). For personal use, select Plus, then proceed to the payment page. Here you'll need to bind a credit card that supports foreign currency transactions (Visa, Mastercard, etc.). Regular domestic China UnionPay single-currency cards won't work.
If you don't have an international credit card, you can apply for a virtual card in advance (e.g., DuPay or OneKey), top it up, and bind it. Make sure the virtual card has enough balance to cover the first month's fee ($20 plus any taxes—recommend at least $22). Otherwise, you'll see the error "Your card has been declined."
