Many beginners want to use GPT-4 but get stuck at the Plus subscription stage. This guide walks you through the full process of registering a ChatGPT account, upgrading your subscription, and switching between accounts — so you can quickly start using the more powerful AI model.

Step 1: Register Your Basic ChatGPT Account

Go to the OpenAI website and click “Sign Up” to create an account using your email or Google account. Note: If you're in a restricted region, you'll need a VPN with global proxy enabled to avoid blocks. After registering, verify your email to complete the basic account setup.

The free account gives you access to GPT-3.5. To unlock GPT-4, web browsing, image generation, and other features, you must upgrade to ChatGPT Plus.

Step 2: Add a Payment Method to Subscribe to Plus

After logging in, click “Upgrade to Plus” in the bottom-left corner and select the individual plan ($20/month). For payment, we recommend using an international credit card (e.g., a virtual card). Domestic Visa/Mastercard cards issued in some regions may occasionally be declined.

If you see “Your card has been declined,” try switching your IP address or binding Apple Pay/Google Pay to bypass risk control. Once the payment goes through, your Plus subscription is activated, and you can immediately use the GPT-4 model.

Step 3: Managing Multiple Accounts & Team Plan

Each Plus subscription is tied to a single account. You can quickly switch between different Plus accounts using browser multi-profile features or extension tools (e.g., SessionBox). If you want to share a subscription, consider purchasing the Team plan (requires separate purchase) or use a secure pooling platform to split costs.

Important: Frequent account switching may lead to IP rate limits. It's best to bind a unique payment method to each account. To log out, go to Settings > Log out.

Troubleshooting Common Subscription Failures

Plus subscription failures are often caused by low IP cleanliness, card restrictions, or mismatched billing addresses. Use a clean residential IP (not a datacenter IP) and make sure the billing address you enter matches the one on your card. If issues persist, contact OpenAI support or try a different virtual card.

Another option is to subscribe via in-app purchase on iOS (requires a US Apple ID). This method has a much higher success rate and is ideal for users who struggle with direct web payments.
