Many beginners hit roadblocks when first using ChatGPT—registration requirements, login options, and switching between accounts can be confusing. This guide provides a practical, step-by-step approach tailored for users who may face regional restrictions, covering everything from sign-up and login to quick account switching.

ChatGPT Account Registration: Email & Phone Number Verification

To register for ChatGPT, you’ll first need a working overseas email address (Gmail or Outlook is recommended) and a phone number that can receive SMS from outside your region. Domestic phone numbers currently cannot receive verification codes directly, so you may need to use a temporary number service or purchase a virtual number—just make sure to choose a platform that won’t get your account banned. Open the ChatGPT official website, click “Sign Up,” enter your email and password, then check your inbox for a confirmation email. Click the link to verify your email. Next, enter your phone number, request a code, and input it to complete registration. After finishing, log in immediately and check your account status to avoid future login issues caused by unusual IP addresses.

ChatGPT Login Methods: Email/Password vs. Third-Party Accounts

There are two main ways to log into ChatGPT: directly entering your email and password, or using Google/Apple account for quick sign-in. If you choose third-party binding, you can authorize via your Google or Apple account when switching devices—no need to re-enter passwords. Note that session history is tied to that account; different login methods do not share data. If you’ve enabled two-factor authentication (2FA), you’ll also need to enter a dynamic code during login. It’s a good idea to disable 2FA or save your recovery codes in advance to avoid lockouts.

Switching Accounts & Managing Multiple Devices: Logout vs. Browser Profiles

When you need to use multiple ChatGPT accounts in turn, the simplest method is to click your avatar in the bottom-left corner → “Log out,” then enter the credentials for another account. While straightforward, this requires typing a password each time. A more efficient approach is using your browser’s multi-user profile feature (supported by Chrome and Edge). Create a separate profile for each account—open a new window to switch instantly without repeated logins. On mobile, the official app currently doesn’t support multi-account switching, but you can delete app data and log into another account, or simply stick with the web version and browser profiles. Be aware that frequent IP changes or rapid consecutive logins may trigger security checks; wait a few minutes between switches.
