ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI's paid subscription service, gives users access to the GPT-4o model and priority features. However, issues like subscription failures, account locks, or request errors can occur. This guide covers the most common problems and their fixes to get you back up and running quickly.

What to Do When Subscription Payment Is Rejected

The most common issue when subscribing to ChatGPT Plus is a failed card payment. This is often caused by your bank's fraud prevention, an expired card, or insufficient funds. Start by checking that your credit card's expiration date and billing address match what's on file with your bank. Also, contact your bank to confirm that international online transactions aren't blocked. If it still fails after several attempts, try a different Visa or Mastercard credit card. PayPal is also a backup option. Note that some virtual credit cards may be flagged as high risk by OpenAI's system, so using a physical card is recommended.

Account Shows "Subscription Status Error" After Login

This message usually appears on your renewal date or after a card payment fails. Solution: Log in to the ChatGPT website, go to "My Plan," and check your subscription status. If it says "Payment Failed," click "Retry Payment" to trigger another charge. If the button doesn't work, consider canceling the subscription and resubscribing, or wait 24 hours for the system to auto-retry. Frequent retries can lead to a temporary lockout, so wait at least 6 hours between attempts.

ChatGPT Plus Request Errors "429" or "502"

During peak hours, even Plus users may encounter "429 Too Many Requests" or "502 Bad Gateway." This isn't an account problem but OpenAI's backend being overloaded. Try refreshing the page with "F5" a few times. If the issue persists, switch your network (e.g., from Wi-Fi to mobile hotspot). For extended errors, wait 1–2 hours before trying again. Clearing your browser cache and cookies can also help reduce these errors.

Account Locked or "Invalid Credentials" Error

Frequent logins from different locations or using third-party plugins can trigger a temporary account lock. First, try resetting your password via "Forgot Password," then log in using the official email verification code. If you still can't unlock it, contact OpenAI support by clicking the "Help" button at the bottom right after logging in and submitting a ticket. Explain that you're a Plus subscriber, and the account is usually unlocked within 1–3 business days. To avoid triggering fraud detection, disable any auto-login scripts.

When Does Plus Subscription Access Expire After Cancellation?

After canceling your Plus subscription, your benefits remain active until the end of the current billing cycle. Once the cycle ends, your account automatically downgrades to the free tier. Your chat history stays saved, but you lose access to the GPT-4o model. If you want to resubscribe after downgrading, simply click "Upgrade to Plus" – no data will be lost. Note: If you encounter payment issues when resubscribing, refer to the first section above.
