Claude Troubleshooting Guide: Fix Subscription Failed, Payment Errors & Account Locked

Claude

Many Claude users encounter subscription payment failures or account lockouts during normal use. This article summarizes the most common issues and their solutions to help you quickly resume normal access. Whether you're upgrading from the free plan to Pro or running into trouble during renewal, these methods should work.

What to Do If Subscription Payment Fails

When subscribing to Claude Pro, the most common reasons for payment rejection are incorrect card details or your issuing bank blocking international transactions. First, double-check that your card number, expiration date, and CVV are entered correctly. Then contact your bank to confirm that international payments are enabled.

Another possibility is insufficient account balance or credit limit. Try using a Visa or Mastercard that supports foreign currency transactions. Avoid virtual credit cards or prepaid cards, as Claude has limited compatibility with these card types.

How to Unlock a Locked Account

Account lockouts usually happen due to frequent login attempts in a short period or unusual changes in IP address. Claude triggers a security mechanism to protect your account. In this case, check your registered email inbox for an unlock email from Anthropic, and click the verification link inside to restore access.

If you don't see the email, first check your spam folder. Alternatively, wait 15 minutes and request a new unlock email. Avoid triggering the unlock process repeatedly, as this may lead to a temporary freeze.

Understanding Request Error Codes

If you encounter "429 Too Many Requests" while using Claude, it means you've exceeded the API or web interface rate limit. Reduce your request frequency and wait a few minutes before trying again. A "401 Unauthorized" error indicates your login session has expired—simply log in again.

Additionally, "500 Internal Server Error" is usually a temporary server-side issue. Refresh the page or try again later. If the problem persists, check the Claude status page to see if there is a maintenance announcement.

Subscription Benefits Not Activated After Payment

Some users find that Pro features don't activate immediately after successful payment. This may be due to a payment callback delay, which typically resolves within 30 minutes. If you still see the free version after half an hour, try logging out and back in, or clear your browser cache.

If the issue continues, contact official customer support with your payment receipt screenshot. The team usually manually enables your Pro access within 1–2 business days.
