Claude FAQ: Conversation Management, Model Switching & Privacy Settings

Claude

When using Claude, many people get stuck on how to switch models, whether chat history syncs across devices, and what privacy settings to watch out for. This Claude FAQ compiles the operations that official documentation doesn't detail but often trip you up in real use, helping you avoid repeated trial and error.

How to Switch Claude Models

On the web or app chat interface, look for the model selection dropdown in the top-left corner or settings menu. Free accounts can only choose between Haiku and Sonnet; the Pro subscription unlocks Opus. If you click Opus and see an "insufficient quota" warning, first check your subscription status—sometimes it's just a system delay, and refreshing after a few minutes resolves it. Also, different models affect context length: Opus handles more text, but if you have heavy conversations, manually clear history to avoid hitting length limits.

Does Chat History Sync Across Devices?

Claude chat history is tied to your account. As long as you log in with the same email, history automatically syncs between PC and phone. Here's the catch: if you delete a conversation on device A, it won't disappear immediately on device B—you need to manually refresh or log out and back in. To avoid sync issues, enable "auto backup" in settings. That way, even if you lose a device, you can restore conversations from a new one.

Privacy Settings & Account Security Tips

Claude doesn't have a standalone "privacy mode" like some other tools, but you can clear all chat history in settings at any time—note this is permanent deletion, not undoable. If you don't want a specific conversation used for model training (Claude's official policy currently doesn't actively use user data for training), manually turn off the "Improve Claude" option. For account security, enable two-factor authentication, especially in family groups with shared accounts, to prevent accidental logins or theft.
