How to Use Claude: A Complete Guide from Sign-Up to Smart Conversations

Claude

Claude, the intelligent assistant developed by Anthropic, has gained widespread attention for its long-context capabilities and strong reasoning power. This article provides a step-by-step guide to help you register, link your account, and quickly master everyday operations while avoiding common pitfalls.

Step 1: Two Ways to Register a Claude Account

Visit the official website at claude.ai and click "Get Started" to begin registration. Currently, you can register via email (Gmail or Outlook recommended) or log in with your Google account in one click. When using email, you'll need to enter a verification code and set a password—make sure it's at least 8 characters long and includes both uppercase and lowercase letters. In some regions, phone number verification may be required. If you don't receive the SMS, try switching to incognito mode in your browser or changing your network environment.

After registration, the system will guide you through basic preference settings, including language, time zone, and whether to receive product update emails. It is recommended to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) by binding Google Authenticator or Authy in the account security settings to prevent account theft.

Step 2: Linking Payment Methods and Choosing a Subscription Plan

Claude offers both a free version and a Claude Pro subscription. The free version has a daily conversation limit (about 20–30 interactions), while the Pro version ($20/month) unlocks unlimited conversations, priority access, and faster response times. For payment, Claude supports Visa, Mastercard credit cards, and PayPal (in select countries/regions).

If you encounter binding failures, common causes include: your credit card not being enabled for international payments, a billing address mismatch with the bank's registered address, or IP restrictions in your region. In such cases, try using a different payment card or contact your bank to confirm if cross-border transactions are being blocked. Note that virtual cards or prepaid cards are usually not accepted.

Step 3: Basic Chat Operations and Model Switching

After logging in, the main interface is a chat box—simply type your question to start. Claude defaults to the latest model version (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet) and supports uploading images, PDFs, TXT files, and more (up to 20MB) for analysis. The left sidebar shows your conversation history, which you can rename or delete.

To switch between different model versions, click the "Model" dropdown menu in the top-left corner. You can choose from Claude 3 Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and others. Opus offers the strongest reasoning capabilities but is slower, making it suitable for complex tasks; Haiku provides the fastest response, ideal for simple Q&A. Note that the free version only supports Sonnet and Haiku—Opus requires a Pro subscription.

Step 4: Advanced Features and Troubleshooting Common Issues

Claude supports a "Projects" feature that allows you to organize related conversations into folders for easier management. If you encounter a "Conversation interrupted" error, it is often due to network fluctuations or session timeout (idle for more than 30 minutes). Simply refresh the page and resend your message. If you see a "Model limit reached" prompt, your account has reached its daily conversation limit—wait 24 hours or upgrade to Pro.

For API users, you need to apply for an API Key on the developer platform and be careful not to expose your key. In daily use, it's recommended to periodically clear your conversation history cache to prevent browser storage from becoming too large and causing page lag.
