Claude Error Troubleshooting: Common Error Codes and Fixes

Claude

Encountering errors while using Claude can be frustrating. Don’t worry—this guide covers the most common error codes and their fixes. Whether it’s a conversation limit or a failed request, follow these steps to get back on track quickly.

Error Code 429: Too Many Requests

If you see “Error 429 Too Many Requests,” it means you’ve sent too many requests in a short period. Claude has rate limits on API calls—the free tier allows up to 5 requests per minute.

The fix is simple: pause for a few minutes and try again, or reduce your request frequency. For batch tasks, add a delay of at least 10 seconds between each request. Pro users can raise the threshold somewhat, but the hourly limit still applies.

Error Code 503: Service Temporarily Unavailable

A 503 error appears when Claude’s servers are overloaded or undergoing maintenance. This isn’t an issue with your account—it’s usually a temporary backend glitch on Anthropic’s side.

Try refreshing the page or waiting 5–10 minutes before reconnecting. If the error persists, check the service status at status.anthropic.com. Also verify your local network is stable—switch Wi‑Fi or try using a mobile hotspot.

Conversation Truncated or “Conversation Too Long” Prompt

Claude has a context length limit per conversation: about 60,000 tokens for the free tier, and 100,000 tokens for Pro users. When your input is too long or the conversation has too many turns, the system may display a “conversation length exceeded” message or truncate the reply.

Start a new conversation to continue your task instead of piling everything into one chat. You can also process long texts in batches, submitting only the key parts each time. Pro users can take advantage of the model’s longer context capability, but there’s still a maximum limit.

Login Error: “Account Issue” or Verification Failure

If you see “Something went wrong” during login or are repeatedly asked for verification codes, it’s often due to simultaneous logins on multiple devices or frequent IP address changes.

Solution: Log out from all devices and keep only one active device logged in. Check your email for any unusual login notifications, change your password immediately, and enable two‑step verification. If you’re using a VPN, stick to a stable server and avoid switching country IPs too often.
