Claude Error Codes: Troubleshooting Guide & Quick Fixes

Claude

Running into errors or service issues while using Claude is a common frustration. This guide covers the most frequent Claude error codes and their fixes—from login failures and request timeouts to interrupted content generation—helping you get back up and running in minutes.

Login & Authentication Errors: Can't Access the Chat Interface

If you see "Invalid credentials" or "Authentication failed" when logging into Claude, start by double-checking your email and password—note that passwords are case-sensitive. If multiple attempts still fail, your account may be temporarily locked. Wait about 15 minutes before retrying, or reset your password using the registered email.

Another common error is "Account not verified." This usually happens if you haven't completed email verification after signing up. Check your inbox for the verification email from Anthropic and click the confirmation link. If it's not there, don't forget to look in your spam folder.

Request Errors & Timeouts: No Response from Claude

When you encounter "Request timed out" or "Network error," first confirm your local internet connection is stable. Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Proxy tools or VPNs can also interfere with requests, so try disabling them. If the issue persists, it might be due to high server load on Claude's end—wait a few minutes and try again.

Another error, "Message too long," means your input exceeds the context window limit. Each Claude conversation has a token cap; messages that go over may be truncated or rejected. To fix this, split long text into smaller chunks and send them separately, or clear older messages from the conversation history to free up space.

Interrupted Responses & Errors: Output Cut Off

A "Response interrupted" or "Generation halted" error mid-conversation usually occurs when the model detects policy-violating content or triggers a safety filter. Review your input for sensitive terms or repetitive requests. Simplifying how you phrase your question often resolves the issue. Also avoid sending many identical requests in a short period, as this can be mistaken for misuse.

If you see "Rate limit exceeded," you've hit the usage quota for the free or Pro plan. Claude enforces per-minute and per-hour limits on both API calls and web chat. Pause for a few minutes and try again, or upgrade to a Pro plan for higher limits. Free users have a fixed number of messages per day—once used up, wait for the reset.
